Paignton is a seaside resort on the south Devon coast. The town was originally a small fishing village and has been in existence since at least Celtic times. Its popularity increased in the mid 1800's with the arrival of the railway, allowing it to be used as a holiday resort. The town still retains much of its Victorian architecture and charm. Kirkham House is a medieval building that has been restored and contains reproductions of medieval furniture and tapestries.
Paignton Pier stretches out 780 feet into the ocean and has recently been extensively restored. The pier dominates the seafront and is home to several pavilions as well as the usual amusement arcades.
If you plan to stay in Paignton in early August during Regatta Week you should book your hotel room well in advance as the town rapidly fills up for this festival. The events include a number of live music events, a firework display, rowing, a round the pier swim and a host of other events on both land and water. The regatta ends with a Songs of Praise evening.
Paignton is justly famous for its long sandy beaches which slope gently into the sea. These are regularly used by bathers and when the wind gets up they also provide some excellent surfing opportunities. You can also hire a deck chair if you prefer to just lie back and enjoy the sun.
Paignton Zoo is one of the largest in England and is home to around 250 species of animals. The zoo does its best to recreate the natural environments of these creatures and this includes a tropical forest, a desert zone and a crocodile swamp.
