The English market town of Northallerton is located within the district of Hambleton, which is within the area of North Yorkshire. The town of Northallerton is located in the area that is known as Vale of Mowbray. This town is also located at the northern end of the area that is known as the Vale of York. The town of Northallerton hosts a population of about fifteen thousand seven hundred and forty one. Since 1974 the town has served as a county town for the area that is known as the North Riding of Yorkshire.

There has been a settlement on the site that is occupied by Northallerton since the Roman times however the settlement has seen considerable growth since the eleventh century. Over the year the area of Northallerton has been a very important place in terms of transportation and trade. The town is on the main route that goes between London and Scotland making the town very popular for trade of various types. The town was established as a market town during 1200 and the town still has a thriving market today.

The town of Northallerton is still very much an important centre for retail and it is the administrative centre for the district of Hambleton and also the county that is known as North Yorkshire. There are a vast number of public sector organisations that have their headquarters within the town.

Nowadays the town of Northallerton still has a vast array of industries however these are now a mixture of light industries, agricultural services, commerce and there are regular livestock auctions held within the market in the town.
