The town of Newtown was originally founded at the end of the thirteenth century. The construction of the town was commissioned by Edward the first of England and the construct of the town was commissioned to Roger de Montgomerie.

During the eighteenth and nineteenth century the town grew rapidly around the industries of flannel and textiles. The arrival of Montgomeryshire Canal also encouraged the growth of the town.

During 1967 the town was designated a new town and this has encouraged a vast growth in the population of the town. The increase in the number of residents within the town has led to the area changing from a rural location into a town with market character.

The town of Newtown is the largest populated town in Wales. Newtown is located about twenty miles from the border with England. The town is surrounded by a large number of small villages that are often classed as Newtown area.
