
The Irish city of Newry is the fourth largest city in Northern Ireland and it is the eighth largest city within the whole of Ireland. The River Clanrye flows through the city and it marks the historic border that separates County Down and County Armagh. The city of Newry is located about thirty-four miles from the city of Belfast and about sixty-seven miles from the city of Dublin. The city of Newry has a population of about twenty seven thousand four hundred and thirty. The wider council area of Newry and Mourne has a population of about eighty seven thousand and fifty eight.
The city of Newry was first founded in 1144 and it was founded alongside the Cistercian monastery and this makes it one of the oldest within Northern Ireland.
During 2006 the city of Newry was one of the most expensive places to purchase a house within the whole of the United Kingdom. The house prices within the city have risen by over three hundred and seventy one per cent. The city has been very prosperous over the recent years and the unemployment level has fallen to only two per cent.
The city of Newry is the home of the headquarters for the district council of Newry and Mourne. A lot of the population within the city are nationalists.
There are a lot of famous people that come from the city of Newry or the surrounding areas and these include Pat Jennings the former goalkeeper who played for Northern Ireland and the actor Gerard Murphy to name a few people.
