The Welsh town of Merthyr Tydfil is located within the area of Rhondda Cynon Taff. The town of Merthyr Tydfil has a population of about thirty thousand. This town was at one point the largest town in Wales however it is now ranked thirteenth for the largest urban area in Wales. The town also gives its name to the local county borough and the borough has a population of about fifty five thousand. The town of Merthyr Tydfil was historically part of Glamorgan County. The town is often referred to as Merthyr. The current boundaries of the town date back to 1974 when the county borough of the town expanded slightly and included the area of Vaynor that is part of Breconshire.

The town of Merthyr Tydfil hosts a wide range of cultural events on a regular basis. Some of the local writers and poets hold poetry evenings within the town. There are also regular musical events that are held at the Cyfarthfa Castle and also in the local park. The town of Merthyr Tydfil was up until recently twinned with the French area of Clichy-la-Garenne.
