Lerwick is the main port and capital of the Shetland Islands in the Shetland Islands in Scotland. It is situated about 160 kilometers off the north coast of mainland Great Britain. Visitors will find there is much to enjoy in the local area, including a variety of notable buildings as well as a host of churches, some of which are notable on their own. Lerwick offers a variety of eating establishments as well as a range of accommodation options. Although Lerwick is situated off the coast it can be easily reached.

The Scottish town of Lerwick is located on the Shetland Islands. The Shetland Islands are located about one hundred miles from the northern coast of the Scottish mainland. The town of Lerwick is located about two hundred and ten miles to the north of Aberdeen, two hundred and thirty miles to the west of the Norway area that is known as Bergean and it is also about two hundred and thirty miles to the south west of the Torshavn area of the Faroe Islands.

The Scottish town of Lerwick is the only burgh in the Shetland Islands. The town of Lerwick has a population of about seven thousand and seventy. Lerwick is the most northerly town within Scotland

The Lerwick name dates back to the time of the Old Norse and the descendant language that is known as Nord was spoken within Shetland up until the middle part of the nineteenth century. The name Lerwick actually means bay of clay. There is evidence of human settlements in this area dating back about three thousand years and the oldest settlements seem to centre around Clickimin Broch

The town of Lerwick is served by the airport that is known as Tingwall and this airport is located a couple of miles outside the town. The town is also served by a regular daily ferry link that is offered by Northlink. The ferries operate between Aberdeen and Lerwick and these ferries regularly go to Kirkwall that is part of the Orkney Islands.

There is a strong educational network within the town of Lerwick and this consists of two primary schools and one secondary school. The two primary schools are known as Sound and the other one is known as Bell's Brae. The high school is known as Anderson.
