Kilmarnock is roughly half way between Ayr and Glasgow. Kilmarnock is the second biggest town within Ayrshire. The burgh of Kilmarnock is located on the banks of the River Irvine and it flows through the eastern part of the town.

There are a vast number of different areas within the burgh of Kilmarnock and these include Byker, Altonhill, Cowgate and Springhill to name a few.

Traditionally the industries within Kilmarnock were focused around heavy engineering and textiles. From 1837 the locomotive company that was known as Andrew Barclay and Sons were based within the town however the company closed in 1970. During the early part of the 1900's the carpet manufacturers that were known as BMK started production within the town. Stoddard Carpets that were the successors of BMK were famous for carpeting the famous ship that was known as the Titanic.

Due to the move of the market towards hard woods and laminated flooring the carpet industry declined within Kilmarnock and it actually ceases in the early part of 2005.
