Lincolnshire, a beautiful and unspoilt county steeped in history, is one of the driest and sunniest areas in Britain, due to its sheltered position in the eastern central region. Woodhall Spa, near the centre of the country, is ideally situated for exploring this fascinating area and was recently adjudged the most attractive and best of the county's many lovely villages.

Much of Woodhall Spa was built early this century, when the royal train often brought King Edward VII and his companions there to join the rich and famous for field sports and country house parties or to take the waters at the Spa, now alas defunct.

The village retains a unique air of relaxed prosperity and friendly courtesy from that golden era, with excellent shops, inns and restaurants lining its broad, tree lined main avenue.

Local amenities include extensive woodland and riverside walks, the latest film releases at the historic Cinema in the woods.

It has first class sports facilities, including tennis, bowls, a fine open air heated pool and the world class Woodhall Spa golf club, recognised as Britain's best inland course and now headquarters of the English Golf Union and its National Golf Centre.

About an hour's drive eastward across the beautiful wolds, miles of safe uncrowded sandy beaches stretch northward from the rumbustious fun of the fair at Skegness.

Three miles south of Woodhall the massive Tattershall Castle Keep, over 500 years old, is one of Britain's finest medieval buildings.

A few miles away at Old bolingbroke, the ruins of Bolingbroke Castle mark the birthplace of Henry IV. On all sides, the clash of ancient battles for the throne of England still seems to echo across the tranquil countryside.

Less than sixty years ago the night skies rang to the roar of heavy aircraft; Lincolshire was 'Bomber County', and Woodhall Spa, encircled by airfields, was home to the famous 617 Dambusters Squadron. These heroic men are commemorated in a local hotel, formely a magnificent country hotel, formerly a magnificentcountry house which was then their officers mess. There is a strikinmg Dambusters memorial in the centre of the village. The Battle of Britain memorial flight at RAF coninsby, and the lovingly rebuilt Lancaster bomber at East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre, are both within easy reach.

Lincoln itself is well under half an hour's drive away. The mighty cathedral is one of Britains greatest treasures, and in nearby Lincoln Castle one of the few surviving original copies of the Magna Carta can be seen in its air conditioned showcase. Few people find that a day is long enough to explore this facinating city.

The Vale is easy to find. From the roundabout at the crossroads as you enter Woodhall Spa, drive up The Broadway past the shops and the church. The third turning to your right, opposite the golf club car park is, Tarleton Avenue, and the double fronted white facade of The Vale faces you across the far end, slightly to the right.

A classic Edwardian villa on three floors, it stands in about an acre of mature gardens, featuring a lake stocked with trench, roach, perch, a couple of wily old carp and a flotilla of ducks. There is ample parking for four cars, but first let us welcome you and show you your room.

On the ground floor there is a self-contained bedroom en-suite with its own kitchenette built into a new conservatory over looking the lake.

Our either two guest rooms are fully en-suite with lake views, also the breakfast conservatory has lovely views of lake and ducks. Guests are welcome to share our sitting room. All rooms are centrally heated with hot drinks facilities and a television.

For health and safety reasons, The Vale is a non-smoking establishment.
