Access Statement
Introduction
The address of Ruth and Robert Matthews is "The White Cottage, London Beach, Ashford Road, St. Michaels, Tenterden, Kent, TN30 6SR". A bed and breakfast business has been in their hands here for twenty three years. Two families of guests from the Continent have been coming here for more than eighteen years. The sleeping part of the accommodation consists of one double bedroom with bathroom en suite; one double bedroom and a twin bedroom which two share a shower room and toilet, although each room has a wash basin.
Pre-arrival
The telephone number is 01233 850583. The website is www.thewhitecottagebedandbreakfast.co.uk; the email is ruth@thewhitecottagebedandbreakfast.co.uk
You are invited to book ahead, but be warned Saturday nights in particular are very popular.
If there is time, you will be asked to make a deposit against the booking, of £15 per room; lacking card facilities, a cheque made to 'Ruth Matthews' will be acknowledged, together with, if useful, a sketch map showing routes to get there.
Arrival and Car Parking Facilities
The White Cottage is on the A28 road, in a rural position with no near neighbours. Guides may show "TN30 6SR" as on the West side of the road - we are on the east side. Coming from all north and east directions (M25 - M20) the White Cottage is the third house on the left after the A262 (Maidstone, Tunbridge Wells, Biddenden) has to halt on meeting the A28. You can run your car in off the road before opening the gate, and the parking is directly in front of you; if everyone parks back to the fence, facing the gate, there is room for three cars all able to go as they please.
Main Entrance and Reception
Our entrance for arrival is obvious, but you will then be escorted to your entrance, a few steps further on. The White Cottage was two houses, of which the second is yours, with your own entrance and key, so once we have shown you in, you may take your key and go and come as you please.
Public Areas - General (Internal)
Your entrance is via a small kitchen, with kettle, microwave, sink, iron and board, refrigerator in which we supply a bottle of milk. The breakfast room is in front, with a service bell on the wall; to the right is your lounge, with easy chairs and TV, and access to the stairs.
Eating Facilities
We offer breakfast of orange juice, a choice of cereals and full English cooked menu. Toast with marmalade or home made redcurrant jelly. The sausages are made five miles down the road and the eggs are laid in our garden.
Within a mile there is a fish and chip shop, and Chinese and Indian takeaways, and if you want to bring some in, we will offer china and cutlery and a table. There is a pub in High Halden, a mile away, with a very extensive menu (not Sunday or Monday evening). At two miles, Tenterden High Street has any number of eating places.
Laundry
You are invited to use your entrance kitchen. Pegs are available, and you may use the outside rotary clothes lines, and the iron and board.
Shop
Three quarters of a mile in St. Michaels village is a group of shops; post office, general grocers, butchery, and hardware shop. Tenterden High Street gives all the usual services.
Treatment
Ivy Court Clinic is on Recreation Ground Road, turning left off the beginning of the High Street. There are several doctors.
Leisure Facilities
Too numerous to details. Tenterden Leisure Centre is large. Any number of Golf Courses, several of very high standard, one of which is in walking distance.
Outdoor Facilities
The area is rich in rural footpaths, and we can lend you maps showing them in detail.
Bedrooms
We have three bedrooms, for two guests each. One has a double bed and private bathroom en suite. One has a double bed, and another has twin beds. The latter two each have a washbasin, but share a shower and W.C. room. We charge per person in the event of single occupation. All bedrooms are upstairs on the first floor, a flight of twelve steps. Each bedroom has a colour TV, with teletext. The luggage racks provided, and the bedside lights, were all conceived and made on the premises, from wood bought as fallen trees.
Touring Facilities
There are two or three taxi firms, but they do not provide a full urban service, especially at night.
Buses to and from Tenterden, Maidstone and Ashford are hourly and will stop on request at the gate.
The nearest railway station is Headcorn, on the main Charing Cross - Ashford line, five miles away. There is a taxi firm in Headcorn, and buses pass near the station.
By car, Canterbury is twenty five miles, Maidstone fifteen, and Ashford twelve. Rye is about twelve miles, and Hastings twenty.
Attractions
Two miles away, in Tenterden, is the station of the Kent & East Sussex Railway. Steam or diesel locomotives take trains to Bodiam, the site of a splendid old castle.
Other attractions - you stayed a fortnight, you go to at least one every day. Gardens, castles, ancient towns, seaside, Downs, etc.
Grounds and Gardens
The house is situated in its own grounds, a third of an acre. Garden chairs and table are on the lawn. The guest path is flanked by a North facing garden. You are invited to look at our garden, which has a considerable variety of plants. Today, in early august, we have counted forty six different types of flowers.
