Known in its original days as the Broadoaks chapel, named after the hamlet of Broadoak, it was built in the late 19th century and was used by a mix of farmers and workers from the local Boconnoc estate, the home of the Fortescue family, descendents of the Pitt family of parliamentary fame. The chapel saw dwindling numbers in the post war years and by the early 1960s congregations were regularly in single figures and there was no longer the finance to pay for its upkeep and maintenance. It closed in 1963 and was left to the elements for several years before being bought by a local cabinet maker and joiner who set about sympathetically converting it into a spacious, comfortable home. Some original features remain and great care was taken to preserve the feel of the chapel, giving it a peaceful internal atmosphere. The current owners, Michael and Babs, are continuing to care for the chapel and have made several improvements including double glazing with attractive leaded windows. There are also some interesting pieces of art, several from Cornish artists, and the house is decorated in a style in keeping with its age. The chapel lies beside the road to Lostwithiel and the bedrooms look east over countryside. We very much enjoy living here and hope you will also enjoy your time at the former Broadoaks chapel and leave us feeling refreshed |
