| Smallwood House Hotel is a family run bed & breakfast, offering quality 4 star accommodation and award winning Cumbrian breakfasts in Ambleside in the heart of the English Lake District. Being slightly larger than your average Cumbrian B&B, our guest house provides the perfect place to enjoy short breaks or longer holidays in one of our 12 comfortable, individually furnished bedrooms. Our bed & breakfast tariff features great deals and special offers throughout the year. In summer, the great outdoors beckons and you can do it all from our hotel doorstep in Ambleside, from climbing the high Lakeland fells or ambling around some low levels walks and waterfalls - on foot or by bike! How about bell ringing, we have groups come to stay to travel around the district ringing the local Church bells. We are in the centre of Ambleside, a bustling and vibrant small market town offering a good selection of specialist shops and great quality restaurants, bars and cafes. Our B&B guests also have use of the luxury spa and swimming pool at a hotel just a few minutes walk away. Ambleside is the perfect choice for exploring the Lake District and Cumbria. Leave the car behind and take a bus trip to some of our lovely nearby towns and villages, such as Grasmere, Hawkshead & Keswick. While you are here explore the nearby homes of famous Lakeland literary figures like William Wordsworth or Beatrix Potter. From the pier at Waterhead in Ambleside you can take a boat trip or cruise on Windermere to Bowness or Lakeside at the opposite end of the Lake. | Accommodation All of our 12 rooms are en-suite, all have under-floor heating in the en-suites and are fully tiled. All rooms are decorated and furnished to a high standard and have colour TVs, tea and coffee making facilities, clock radios and hairdryers and are fully central heated. Family rooms, which sleep 3 are available and groups can also be accommodated in twin and triple rooms. Our two single rooms are great favourites. The morning sun fills the room with a warm glow and helps you start the day with a sunny warm feeling. The view of Wansfell, gives you the incentive to pull on your boots and get out onto the fells for the day. We use the luxurious Pure Lakes toiletry products in our rooms, their hand wash, shower gel and body lotion are so lovely. Pure Lakes are an organic local company producing these wonderful toiletries, so using these means you can be helping to do your bit for the environment. If you like them as much as we do, you can purchase some before you go home. sometimes they may have only been made that week !! We have a romantic four poster room, why not treat that someone special to flowers and champagne on arrival? We will be happy to arrange this for you.   | The Lounge In the lounge, guests can play games, chat together, read from our selection of local books or simply relax. The open fire (especially during the festive season) is an addition no one can avoid. We love to hear the laughter from a group of friends gathering in the evening before going out. Breakfast Our breakfast has been given an award by the Visit Britain inspector who has to actually try it to do so. We cook everything freshly for you and our range covers just about most tastes. Homemade black pudding produced by Claytons in Windermere, is delicious along with your egg & bacon. We also offer kipper fillets, fruits & yoghurt. A continental style breakfast is also available for those with a lighter appetite. We keep a selection of vegetarian and gluten free foods for those who prefer them. | Parking The Smallwood has a private resident's only car park at the rear of the hotel which provides easy access to the hotel and an excellent area to get ready for the days walking. Evening meals All our meals are homemade and freshly prepared. Evening meals are served on one week of each month - between March & October. Packed lunches We can make up packed lunches for your day out, with our homemade gingerbread, sandwiches of your choice, a selection of fruit & biscuit and fill your flask .   | The Cuckoo's Nest, Self Catering Cottage in Ambleside The Cuckoos Nest a delightful self-catering cottage and is as charming as it sounds. The cottage was completely refurbished and opened in January 2004. This prettily furnished hideaway offers every thing you'll need for an extra special, enjoyable lazy break. The Cuckoos Nest is cosy and comfortable and ideally situated in the heart of Ambleside although the hustle and bustle outside does not spoil the privacy and romantic atmosphere inside. Ambleside is a favourite with walkers and tourists alike, it offers a wealth of activities or provides an excellent starting point for easy access to all corners of the region. This lovingly furnished one bedroomed retreat is both compact and convenient making it an ideal base for exploring the quaint village or varied walks which emanate from this beautiful Lakeland village. There are two floors comprising kitchen/dining area, lounge, bathroom and one double bedroom. Facilities include gas central heating, fully fitted kitchen (including dishwasher, fridge & freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster), bathroom with shower, Spa bath and hairdryer. The comfortable lounge has TV with freeview and DVD player. The twinkling lights in the bathroom make bathtime extra special. The self catering accommodation is situated next to Smallwood House Hotel with direct access onto the private car-park.
