Slipper Cottage is a great base from which to explore Somerset and the surrounding area. | MONTACUTE is only 1 mile from the main A303 (the main trunk road from London to the South West), and is about 18 miles from the M5 motorway. Directions From London, Heathrow or Gatwick take the M3 to J8, then the A303 to Cartgate Roundabout (about 7 miles west of Ilchester), left onto A3088, after half a mile turn right into Montacute. From the north or south take M5 to J25, then take the A358 towards Ilminster, left onto A303 for about 10 miles to Cartgate roundabout, right onto a3088, after half a mile turn right into Montacute. We are located on the left 100 yards before the church. It is the only house with a bay window. |
| MONTACUTE is now a conservation village and has a tremendous amount of character. It still has it's own Post Office, Primary School and Garage. Most houses have been built from the wonderful mellow yellow stone from 'Ham Hill', where there is a quarry used since Roman times. MONTACUTE has 2 'eating houses' and other wonderful Pubs and restaurants in nearby villages. There are wonderful walks round the village, including walks over Hedgecock Hill, St. Michael's Mount and Ham Hill (an Iron Age Hill Fort). You can also walk round 'Lady's Walk' especially designed for the Ladies of Montacute House to view the House and Estate. This hillside is carpeted with wild anemones and bluebells in the spring. The film 'Sense and Sensibility was filmed here. |
| A Little Ancient History of Montacute: Montacute has been in existence since 7th Century (over 1300 years) when it was called Logworesbeorth. In the 9th Century it's name changed to Bishopston, now the road on which 'Slipper Cottage' stands.During the reign of King Cnut (Canute 1016-1035), his right hand man Tofig had a vision and found a Holy Cross on St Michael's Hill, he was then to transport it to Waltham where he had Waltham Abbey built. This cross eventually was in the possession of King Harold at the battle of Hastings - although it did not do him much good! At the time of the Domesday Book (1086), Montacute, as it was now called, was owned by the Count Robert of Mortain, half brother of William Duke of Normandy. In 1102 Robert of Mortain established a Cluniac Priory, which was eventually pulled down in 1539 by King Henry VIII, during his Dissolution of the Monasteries. Although, the Gatehouse still exists and is still used as a private home. In 1340 Montacute paid the 9th highest tax in the County - this tradition seems to carry on now 700 years later!!! In 1595 Edward Phelips, the largest landowner in town, and Speaker of the House of Commons, built the magnificent Elizabethan MONTACUTE HOUSE, which is now owned by the National Trust. This is just round the corner from SLIPPER COTTAGE. In fact, the Montacute House Estate once owned Slipper Cottage |
