The coastline around West Bay has now been designated a 'World Heritage' site which ranks it alongside such natural wonders as the 'Grand Canyon' and the 'Great Barrier Reef'.

West Dorset is approximately 417 square miles of unspoilt countryside designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has magnificent coastal scenery with a fascinating variety of sandy beaches towering cliffs and shingle banks, which include the famous Chesil Beach.

Inland there are picturesque villages with their thatched cottages and ancient churches of considerable architectural interest. Thomas Hardy was born at Higher Bockhampton and used the local countryside as a background for many of his novels.

There are stately homes and gardens, ancient monuments and castles, museums and art gallerieswithin easy reach.

If you enjoy hiking or leisure walking this area will be a paradise for you with one of the most spectacular sections of the south west coast path just a short walk from the hotel. Just eight miles to the west is Lyme Regis over the awesome Golden Cap (the highest point on the south coast). To the east is the equally majestic walk to Abbotsbury along the cliff above the Chesil beach. There are many flat and 'easy' sections of both walks for the less athletically inclined.
