Otters Green is situated at the top of the tidal reaches of the River Hamble, in the heart of a beautiful conservation area but only a few minutes walk from the centre of the village of Botley, which has been described as: 'The most delightful village in the world. It has everything in a village I love and none of the things I hate.' (William Cobbett, 1805)
Otters Green was so called because the otters came from the river to play on the green. Sadly they were hunted as late as the sixties and now with wild mink in the river, we no longer enjoy the presence of such delightful animals.![]() The dwelling itself was originally the stable to the big house next door. The bed and breakfast accommodation is situated in the original stable block, now beautifully renovated into three en suite bedrooms. ![]()

A short five-minute walk away is the delightful village of Botley. The village at one time boasted fourteen pubs. It is thought the reason was that travellers in the old days had to cross a ford. The river Hamble has the double tides of the Solent; consequently the travellers may have had to wait up to six hours to cross the river. Thankfully today we have a bridge but are still blessed with numerous and varies places of refreshment in the village, including several excellent restaurants, public houses and a café ~ all within a few minutes walk from Otters Green.
Otters Green provides an excellent base to explore the surrounding area. To the South The Solent bustles with craft of all types. A trip to the Isle of Wight is a must for first time visitors to the area. To the East The historic port of Portsmouth is a city packed with interest, perhaps most famously for old sailing ships, the Victory and the Warrior. Further east is the wonderful city of Chichester with its Cathedral spire visible long before arriving in this beautiful old city. To the West A visit to the New Forest is a must, to include the pretty village of Beaulieu, Bickers Hard where old sailing ships are built, the motor museum and the busy yachting town of Lymington. Further west are Salisbury, Wilton, Stonehenge, Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth. To the North The old capital of Wessex, Winchester is a favourite with visitors from all over the world.
