| The Old House is a spacious family residence standing in its own half acre of mature grounds with private car park. Situated close to the town centre on the B1053 Halstead road, it is a listed house of special architectural and historic interest, the oldest part having been built in the second half of the sixteenth century. There are many interesting features, the first floor was originally jetted but is now underbuilt. There is also a fine example of octagonal Tudor chimneys. A previous owner of the house was the famous Dr Samuel Dale, friend and biographer of the naturalist John Ray. Bradford Street has 65 timber-framed houses, a couple dating from the thirteenth century. The street is identified with the woollen trade and the wealthy wool merchants. The word 'Bocking' described a distinct type of cloth. |
