| The Town Macclesfield is twenty minutes drive east from the M6 or a similar drive from Manchester Airport. Situated close to the Pennine Hills (the backbone of England) it is a thriving market town, established in mediaeval times, with quaint buildings and some cobbled streets interspersed with many fine Georgian houses of distinction. The excellent modern shopping area affords magnificent views of the Peaks rising above the town. In the town centre is the only silk museum in the country, together with Paradise Mill, a Victorian silk mill giving practical demonstrations on hand looms. There are many good restaurants in and around the town. The Area To the west is the tranquil farmland of the Cheshire plain, to the east the dramatic rugged hills of the Peak District National Park and Buxton. To the south lies Stoke on Trent and the Potteries, whilst Manchester is due north. The area abounds in out-door leisure activities including walking trails through magnificent countryside such as Tegg's Nose Country Park, Macclesfield Forest and the Macclesfield Canal Ring. The views from the top of Shutlingsloe are magnificent on a clear day. Cheshire cycle ways, golf courses, climbing, sailing, fishing and leisure centres are all close by. There are many historic houses and gardens within half an hour's drive. The Jodrell Bank Radio telescope is a must for visitors to the area. |
