About Us

Monkscider House - an unusual name! A combination, I suppose, of local history Cleve Abbey is just around the corner! the fact that the farmhouse had a cider press in it when we cleared away the ivy covering most of the front and a family nickname. What was a half-derelict storehouse for unwanted farm equipment, and a temporary abode for pigs, is now a comfortable family home, with bags of space, in an ideal location on the edge of Washford, and within striking distance of all the local attractions Butlins and the Tropiquaria for the kids, Dunster Castle and Cleve Abbey for history buffs, and the Steam Railway Museum and steam trains for those whose historical interests are closer to the present.

We converted the old farmhouse using traditional materials - oak from half-a-dozen trees that we bought to replace windows, doorframes, beams and the two magnificent staircases. The floors came from Exmoor oak, terracotta tiles, and huge slate slabs that we dug up from what is now the living room and we used the space we had extravagantly! No miserly squeezing in extra accommodation. A spacious entrance hall, and lofty landing. The double bedroom en-suite, of course is lofted, and half timbered as is its bathroom, which features an enormous, and deep, Victorian style bath! The twin bedded room has a cottagy feel very comfortable (according to visitors) and with its own ante-room and en-suite shower. A third double bedded room (which we only let out as a single) shares a third bathroom, directly opposite, and has French windows that look out onto farmland and the distant Quantocks.

The same spaciousness is found in the dining room, a traditional style country room, with a long central table great for emulating the feats of Douglas Fairbanks Jnr. - and a grand piano at the far end for those that like to relax tinkling on the ivories. Guests can also use the large sitting room with a huge stone fireplace for those cold winter evenings providing you dont mind throwing on the occasional 3 foot log to keep it going!
David and Jan have attempted to keep the atmosphere friendly and relaxed. No stuffiness here, and those little extras that you need are happily supplied, if you tell us your special culinary requirements when you book up! And we can tell you where you can go to find the best local restaurants and pubs all from personal experience, and which have been endorsed by our visitors.
