| Marsh Farm Hotel at the Crossroads Historically one of the most important routes in England has been from London to the seaport of Bristol. In prehistoric days the "drove roads" were the natural path for cattle and their herdsmen to follow their grazing as the seasons changed. Later this well worn way over the low hills of Wiltshire became the road used first by the Romans and then by successive generations making their way between the two most important ports in the country. Charles Dickens wrote his Pickwick papers about the Great West Road, which is just a few miles south of Marsh Farm Hotel. Many stories in this famous novel are based on pubs and villages along the road we today know as the A4.
After the decline of the steam era in the 1960's men with vision saw the potential of the route on the new motorway network, which was completed over the following 20 years. This route again used the Vale of the White Horse over the low hills of Wiltshire and is the M4. Today this has major significance for visitors to the hotel not only by road, rail and air as a means of access but also for the tourist interested in England's culture and history.

When the road became inadequate for the increasing traffic for the heavier freight about 250 years ago, innovative engineers built one of the busiest canals which passes through Devizes just a few miles south of Marsh Farm. In the mid 19th Century with the advent of the steam train, Brunel built one if the first commercial railway lines which is still used today. He chose Swindon to be the site of his principal junction to Gloucester and where to construct the factory, which for a century built some of the world's most famous locomotives.
Marsh Farm is close to each of these major thoroughfares. Its location is one and a half miles from junction 16 on the M4 just two miles west of Swindon. The hotel is ten minutes by taxi from Swindon railway station and its frequent service to not only London (one hour) and Bristol (30 minutes), but also Oxford, the midlands, South Wales and Gloucester. The World Heritage City of Bath, the dreaming spires of Oxford and the historic market town of Marlborough are all less than an hour away by road. The international airports at Heathrow, Bristol, Birmingham and Cardiff are all about one hour by car from the hotel. Marsh farm is approximately two hours from London by car. |
