"The loveliest spot that man hath ever found"
From the moment you turn into the drive you realise that this really is a special place.
A truly magnificent country house hotel, which commands panoramic and inspirational views of Lake Windermere and mountains from the seclusion of its own wooded grounds. Just three miles north of Windermere and two miles south of Ambleside, it is situated in the heart of Lakeland.
Large, imposing stately rooms oak panelled and mellowed with the years, a collection of fine oil paintings, ornate carved fireplaces and the magnificent oak staircase tell their own story of a hotel rich in history and character.
The foundation stone for the building itself was laid in 1890, and the house took some five years to complete. It was first opened as a hotel in 1930. However, there are artifacts in the hotel which date back as far as 1664.
Blessed with so many architectural and decorative examples of our heritage, not to mention hidden treasures, such as the original mosaic floors in the porch, laid by craftsman brought over from Italy, the house is listed as one of national and historic interest. The Hotel's outstanding interior and location, made it a natural choice for the classic English country house in Alfred Hitchcock's production of "The Paradine Case", starring Gregory Peck, and more recently in the BBC's portrayal of the life of Donald Campbell.
The Langdale Chase history book charting the story of Langdale Chase Hotel from 1890 to present is available from reception for a small fee.
Six acres of beautifully landscaped gardens slope gently from the hotel to the lake shore. They were planned and laid out by Thomas Henry Mawson, a landscape architect of international distinction, who was responsible for the "Palace of Peace Gardens" in the Hague.
The Hotel's reception rooms and terraces enjoy some of Lakeland's most spectacular panoramic views, recently voted "best view in Britain" by Caterer Magazine. The gardens at Langdale Chase are a riot of colour all year round, but May is a particularly spectacular month when the garden is ablaze with flowering azaleas and rhododendrons.
As you explore the woodland walks and lakeshore paths you will see why the Hotel's gardens are some of the most perfectly set in the whole of Europe.
Langdale Chase enjoys one of the longest garden frontages to Lake Windermere and guests can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Lake, with its water skiers, steamers, sailing boats, traditional charr anglers and World Water Speed Record attempts in the Autumn.
With such magnificent gardens and a truly unmatched setting it is little wonder that Langdale Chase is one of the Lake District's most popular wedding and special occasion venues.
The hotel grounds are a wedding photographers paradise and this ensures that the newly married couple get a unique memento of their wedding at this beautiful hotel.
All the bedrooms are individually and tastefully furnished, some with unique features such as jacuzzi bath, four poster bed and stained glass ceiling roof, most have lake views and all have private bathrooms.
The hotel also boasts a unique bedroom. This particularly romantic room is situated over the boat house, where you will be lulled to sleep to the sound of gently lapping water.
Further accommodation is provided by the Lake House, with private car parking.
Panoramic views invite you to wine and dine in our restaurant, perhaps preceded by a drink in our intimate bar. Designed to compliment the setting, the variety of food and wine is sure to delight the most discerning diner, and being pampered by our attentive staff will be one of the many highlights of your stay with us.
Lunches and afternoon teas are available indoors or out on the lawn fringed terraces. Dinner is always a special occasion and our rosette awarded restaurant boasts a fine speciality selection in addition to the delicious table d'hôte dinner menu. For your special occasion, be it wedding, anniversary, cocktail party or a birthday treat, we can create a special menu and offer private dining facilities.
The beauty of the hotel setting, the character of the hotel and the quality of its facilities are matched only by the warmth of the welcome you will receive.
The hotel has a long tradition of treating its residents not as transient visitors but as personal guests in a well managed country home.
Here, before the welcoming crackle of a roaring log fire, or as you relax in the grounds, admiring Mother Nature's bright, vivid pallet of colours, you too will discover that the genuine warmth and hospitality that once graced the ancient homes of England is still very much alive!
Situated on the A591, 3 miles north of Windermere, 2 miles south of Ambleside.
