Welcome to a luxury retreat in... "The loveliest spot that man hath ever found" From the moment you turn into the drive you realise that this really is a special place. A truly magnificent country house hotel, which commands panoramic and inspirational views of Lake Windermere and mountains from the seclusion of its own wooded grounds. Just three miles north of Windermere and two miles south of Ambleside, it is situated in the heart of Lakeland. It is difficult to imagine a more rewarding way to enjoy the natural splendour of one of Britain's and Europe's most beautiful regions. But a delightful setting and scenery that moved Wordsworth to describe the Lakes as "The loveliest spot that man hath ever found" are not the only reasons to stay at Langdale Chase. The hotel has so much more to offer.
HISTORY Large, imposing stately rooms oak panelled and mellowed with the years, a collection of fine oil paintings, ornate carved fireplaces and the magnificent oak staircase tell their own story of a hotel rich in history and character. The first foundation stone for the building itself was laid in 1890 and the house took some five years to complete. It was first opened as a hotel in 1930. However, there are carvings and artefacts in the hotel which actually date as far back as 1664. Blessed with so many architectural and decorative examples of our heritage, not to mention hidden treasures such as the original mosaic floors in the porch which were laid by craftsmen brought over specially from Italy, the house is listed as one of National and Historic Interest. And of course, the Lake District is steeped in history. From Langdale Chase you don't have to go far to walk in the steps of Coleridge, Walpole, Shelley, Ruskin, Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.
THE GROUNDS Six acres of beautifully landscaped gardens slope gently from the hotel to the lake shore. They were planned and laid out by Thomas Henry Mawson, a landscape architect of international distinction, who was responsible for the "Palace of Peace Gardens" in the Hague. The Hotel's reception rooms and terraces enjoy some of Lakeland's most spectacular panoramic views, recently voted "best view in Britain" by Caterer Magazine. The gardens at Langdale Chase are a riot of colour all year round, but May is a particularly spectacular month when the garden is ablaze with flowering azaleas and rhododendrons. As you explore the woodland walks and lakeshore paths you will see why the Hotel's gardens are some of the most perfectly set in the whole of Europe. Langdale Chase enjoys one of the longest garden frontages to Lake Windermere and guests can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the Lake, with its water skiers, steamers, sailing boats, traditional charr anglers and World Water Speed Record attempts in the Autumn. With such magnificent gardens and a truly unmatched setting it is little wonder that Langdale Chase is one of the Lake District's most popular wedding and special occasion venues. The hotel grounds are a wedding photographers paradise and this ensures that the newly married couple get a unique memento of their wedding at this beautiful hotel.
