The Lake is a lovely old country hotel built originally as a private residence around 1820. It still has an air of informal charm and atmosphere - hard to find in today's bustling world. It has been run by the Wyatt family as a hotel since Easter 1964.The Lake , 17K

Bonchurch is situated half a mile from Ventnor and three miles from Shanklin, and is famous for its past literary residents, Dickens, Swinburne and Shaw. There is excellent walking along the coast or across the downs and the famous landslip walk starts in Bonchurch itself.

The Lake , 14KWelcome to the Lake, whether for the first time or a returning guests, and we are confident that you will enjoy the first class food and service this family-run hotel offers.

The Lake is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery on the Island.

The shingle and sand beach is 400 metres from the hotel and is rarely crowded and affords good bathing. Riding, fishing, golf, tennis, bowls and a host of activities are within walking distance, or a short journey by car.

Lake Hotel, 10KSet in its own lovely 2 acre gardens, the hotel nestles at the foot of the famous undercliff on the seaward side of the village, with St. Boniface Down rising magnificently 800 feet on the northern side, thus ensuring a mild, almost sub-tropical climate. The Lake, 8K

The house is comfortably furnished and centrally heated throughout, you can relax in the main lounge, sun lounge or television room, all facing south.

Good food and service is an important part of any holiday and the The Lake has a reputation firmly established in both. A well chosen wine list at modest prices compliments then which is varied and attractive - fresh local Island produce being used whenever possible. The Lake, 13K

Our 20 bedroom, are all en-suite and have a pleasant aspect, the majority with views to the south or downs outlook.

Bonchurch nestles snugly on the stretch of the south coast of the island named by our contemporaries the 'Maderia of England', and enjoys the highest record sunshine throughout the year. Unruffled by time, it still retains the unspoilt charm of a century ago.

Charles Dickens, who spent the summer of 1849 in Bonchurch said 'views only to be equaled on the Genoese shore of the Mediterranean', and before leaving he pronounced 'Naples is hot and dirty, New York feverish, Washington bilious, Genoa exciting, Paris rainy - but Bonchurch was smashing!'
