Location

Kirkton House is a converted 18/19th Century farmstead built around an attractive courtyard, commanding an elevated position in two acres of grounds above the north Clyde village of Cardross. Only 18 miles west of Glasgow and 15 miles from Glasgow Airport, the location offers an easily accessible "country" base for the Airport, Loch Lomond, the Trossachs, Glasgow's Burrell Collection, and the main route to the west highlands and islands.

The locality has myriad scenic, historical and achitectural points of interest. The 12th century "Kirkton chapel" is at the end of the drive. Rennie Macintosh's "Hill House" is four miles away above Helensburgh - a "must" for design buffs!

There are pleasant walks in the immediate countryside - one at the top of the local valley commands a spectacular view of Loch Lomond.

The location is ideal for those visiting Glasgow's cultural or commercial interests (about 35 mins either by car or by half hourly train service). The Clyde Submarine base at Faslane is only about 8 miles away.

Stewart and Gillian MacDonald, after being expatriots for many years in various parts of the world, established Kirkton House as a premier place to stay near Glasgow and Loch Lomond in 1984. They have been priviledged to serve guests from over 68 countries during their 24 years in business!

The Facilities

Kirkton House offers an informal relaxed ambiance, and the friendly but unobtrusive, personal service of your hosts. The public rooms have the original stone walls and rustic fireplaces - one with an authentic "swee" for hanging the cooking pots.

  • RESIDENTS' LOUNGE with open fire and a varied selection of books, magazines, games, postcards and touring information.
  • EXTENSIVE SCOTTISH BREAKFAST MENU prepared to order.
  • Kirkton House is no longer licensed to sell alcohol, but there is a small range of soft drinks, mixers and fruit juices available for guests at modest cost. Guests may bring there own alcoholic drinks and wines. Suitable glassware can be provided at a cost of 25p per glass (less cost of any soft drinks/fruit juices purchased from Kirkham House) to cover handling/cleaning costs. Ice and/or a jug of chilled tap water is available free of chage.

Directions to Kirkton House:

By train:

From Glasgow Queen Street (Lower Level) take any 'Helensburgh' bound train and disembark at Cardross (journey time about 34 mins.) There is no telephone or taxi service at Cardross station (1 mile from Kirkton House), so if you would like a courtesy car to meet you... please telephone from Glasgow to tell us which train you are on.

By car:
From the South (and East)

Follow the M6, A74, M74 and then the M8 for Glasgow.
We recommend staying on the M8 through Glasgow (rather than taking the old A82 Dumbarton road which is slower) and pat the airport in the direction of Greenock. (If coming from Stranraer or Prestwick Airport take A77 towards Glasgow and after Newton Mearns turn left onto A726 towards Paisley and follow signs go Glasgow Airport and take the M8 in the direction of Greenock).
About 3.5 miles on the M8 after the airport, take exit onto the M898 over the Erskine Bridge (toll 60p).
Take the left fork off the bridge onto the A82 (towards Crianlarich). After three miles on the A82 (carrying straight on A82 at a roundabout midway), take the left filter at the traffic lights onto the A814 (for Dumbarton and Helensburgh).
Cardross village is about four miles past Dumbarton. Then follow the village directions below:

From the North (and West)

Head for Helensburgh on the north bank of the Clyde - either following the A814 from Arrochar down Loch Long side, or taking the faster A82 road from Tarbet down Loch Lomond side past Luss and then right onto the B832.
At the bottom of the hill in Helensburgh turn left on to A814 towards Dumbarton. Cardross village is about 4 miles on A814. Then follow the village directions below:

Village directions:

At the west end of Cardross village, turn north off the A814 up "Darleith Road" (there is a floral triangular traffic island and Hotel sign at the juncion).
After about 700 yds (passing out of the main housing line) through trees and then with fields on either side, three cottages will be on your right.
Turn right into Kirkton House drive immediately after the third cottage.
About 100 yds up the drive, turn right up to the guest car park for the hotel entrance.

Please park economically in a row facing into, or out from, the dry stone wall.
