The friendly family dogs, Lily and Islay, will greet you on arrival at our country house set in half an acre of lovely walled gardens. Dorset is synonymous with Thomas Hardy for it is here amongst these lovely villages that he was born and set his novels. An ideal base for explorations is Holyleas House, a welcoming house in apple-pie order and home to Tia and Julian Bunkall. After a day exploring, make yourself at home in the guests' sitting room; toast your toes by the log fire and browse the selection of interesting books. Enjoy breakfast round the long polished dining-room table - eggs come from the hens roaming the garden, jams are homemade, and there's a vegetarian alternative to the traditional cooked breakfast. 3guest rooms, £35-£40 per person, children welcome We have prettily decorated, double, twin and single rooms with views across open countryside. All rooms have tea making facilities and private bathrooms. The Guests' Sitting Room has a wonderful blazing log fire in the winter where you can feel at home and hunker down with one of our many books. |
 Main Bedroom - The premier bedroom is the spacious twin/king with its views both to the village lane and the garden and a snug en-suite shower room. Bedroom 2- A double-bedded room has an en-suite, bath with shower. Overlooking the garden. Bedroom 3 - single-bedded room has its own private bathroom opposite. Closed Christmas, no credit card facilities, no-smoking house Buckland Newton is a peaceful village in the heart of Hardy's Dorset, surrounded by rolling hills and many good walks. Indeed, the Wessex Ridgeway runs close by. We are very well situated for exploring the glorious countryside and Dorset coastline (only about half an hours drive) with historic towns of Sherborne and Dorchester both approximately 10 miles away. There are numerous historic houses and some superb gardens to be visited. As well as visiting Hardy's home and the setting of his books, from here you can easily explore several interesting towns and villages: Milton Abbas, an 18th-century show village of white and golden thatched cottages; Cerne Abbas with its thatched Tudor cottages overlooked by a 180-ft giant carved into the hillside; Sherborne, an architectural feast of golden-stone buildings and a castle built by Sir Walter Raleigh; Dorchester, the Casterbridge of Hardy's novels. Directions From Dorchester, take the B3134 into Buckland Newton over the crossroads and Holyleas House will be found on the right hand side, opposite the Village cricket pitch.  |
