The hotel was built as a shooting lodge in 1787 reputedly by the Johnes Family of "Hafod". Later it was converted into a Swiss style country retreat by the third Duke of Newcastle.

The Red kite may sometimes be sighted from the terrace hovering above one of the few remaining habitats of this now rare bird.

Situated on Drover and Pilgrim routes the The Hafod Hotel makes a perfect venue for exploring the surrounding countryside. Vast forest and unspoilt hillside expanses offer walks and drives through some of Wales' most spectacular scenery. Clywedog Lake, Nant-y-Moch Lake and Elan Valley Lakes are each within a twenty mile drive of the hotel.

For the railway enthusiast, one of the Great Little Trains of Wales runs from Devils Bridge village (3 minutes walk from the hotel) through eight miles of beautiful Rheidol Valley to the University town of Aberystwyth is acknowledged to possess some of the finest buildings in Wales ranging from the ancient castle ruins to the impressive white stone buildings of the National Library of Wales.
