Alston - Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Alston sits at the crossroads of five historic trans-pennine routes and four of these roads climb to around 2,000ft passing through breathtaking scenery.

It is an ideal starting point from which to explore the Lake District, rural Northumberland, Hadrians Wall, The Scottish Borders and the Durham Dales.

It is the ideal walking country, with many footpaths criss-crossing the area; the views from the top of Hartside Pass on the A686 are said to be the best in Britain.
