Welcome to the Fleece Hotel

Here is the ideal venue for short breaks, business visitors, and those who want to explore the busy market towns and irresistibly picturesque villages of the Cotswolds. This 17th century coaching inn has been privately owned and managed since 2001. Grade II listed, it has since been extensively refurbished and has 30 bedrooms, including family rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Amongst the original features in a fine Jacobean oak staircase that rises from first floor level. We offer three star comfort and service, special rates for weekend bookings, an historic setting and exceptional cuisine.

Even if you are just visiting for the day, you are welcome to take the morning and afternoon breaks at the Fleece, lunch here or enjoy a delicious afternoon tea in our courtyard. Or maybe have an early evening meal at The Fleece, before you take in a show at Cirencester's nearby Brewery Arts Theatre.

Just the Business

If you are in this area on business, you will find perfect accommodation at the Fleece. Here there is peace and quiet, yet we are at the heart of a bustling county town. Each of our bedrooms is equipped with the business user in mind, and includes a secure room safe that will hold a laptop computer. The direct dial telephones have data ports, and the remote control colour television sets are equipped with teletext and a scart connection for computer games. Other bedroom facilities include a radio, hairdryer, trouser press, iron and ironing board, and tea and coffee making facilities.

The hotel's fax machine is available to guests. The businesses that built The Fleece were wool processing and cloth weaving. The painted likeness of frames and braces, which distinguishes the front elevation of the hotel, is itself an antique curiosity. The carriageway of the Georgian section is now the hotel's reception area, and opens out onto a sheltered courtyard. When the weather allows, this is much enjoyed by business visitors for alfresco eating and informal meetings.

Room for Leisure

At The Fleece we have a range of very comfortable single, double, twin, four poster and family rooms.

The décor, fabrics, furniture and artifacts in each have been chosen with care to blend sympathetically with the age of the building, and, at the same time, meet the needs and aspirations of our 21st century guests. This is the ideal venue for your Cotswold leisure break, or to use as a base for a touring holiday in the area. Hotel guests can take dinner during the week in either the resident's restaurant or our adjacent high street "1651" bar and restaurant.

The former is also available for private dining parties of up to 40 people.

The Mood to Relax

The lounge bar at The Fleece is in one of the oldest parts of the building and has long been a popular meeting place for the local community. Here you may hear stories of Cirencester, gain insider knowledge about where to go and what to see, or simply sit and people watch in a cosy bar. Note the windows with their original fastenings, the coloured glass roundels that depict aspects of the wool trade, and the fine old fireplaces that remain a feature of this historic building.

The adjacent resident's lounge, which overlooks the courtyard, is a haven of tranquility. Here the old walls are very thick, and the lintel of running vine was hand carved on site in the mid 1900's. There is also a display of hand painted, 17th and 18th century tiles, and an interesting collection of artwork on the walls.

Dining in '1651'

The high street "1651" bar and brasserie style restaurant opened in 2001. It is named after that moment in time when Charles II, defeated at the Battle of Worcester, spent a night hiding in these buildings on his flight to ultimate exile in France. Chris Bowler's fine monochrome photographs adorn the walls; they were taken during the National Trust's 350th anniversary re-enactment of the 17th century events. The bar area retains the "feel" of its Georgian origins, with original moulding and decorative motifs highlighted in traditional colours.

The ambiance in the dining room is achieved by an inspired fusion of medieval style colours and continental eclecticism in fixtures and fittings. Here you can choose from an imaginative a la carte menu that reflects the vibrant colours, evocative aromas and fresh tastes of the Mediterranean. Our Chef's mouth watering menus are also inspired by authentic English and Asian cuisine. We have an extensive list of wines to complement your meal. The "1651" restaurant is open for residents and non residents to enjoy lunch and dinner.
