Elm Tree Cottage can be found in the charming fellside village of Culgaith, right in the heart of the Eden Valley and at the foot of the Pennine range.

The Vale of Eden is ideally situated for touring the Lake District, with Ullswater being only 11 miles away, as well as Hadrians Wall, Teesdale and the Scottish Borders.

Eden itself lives up to its name as it is truly a vast garden of great natural beauty containing un-spoilt and un-cluttered breathtaking landscape. The Vale is an area with lush green pastures on the valley floor which then gradually change as the eye follows the track of dry stone walls up rolling hills onto the North Pennines on one side and the magnificent Cumbrian Mountains on the other.

The whole tapestry is further enhanced with sight of fast flowing River Eden which is famous for its stocks of both salmon and wild brown trout. This is ideal fishing country and the rolling hills provide an unlimited number of walks for the novice to the dedicated fell walker.

HOT WATER

There is a very large tank upstairs in the airing cupboard. The water heats up at night on the off-peak white meter and provides one large tank of water per day. Visitors are asked to endeavour to make this last through out the full 24 hours. It does not provide enough hot water for endless baths, however, if it is used sensibly there should be sufficient for most purposes. Both switches in the airing cupboard must be switched on. There is a booster switch in the airing cupboard.

HEATING (general)

The cottage is heated by night storage heaters which charge up over night.

These storage heaters can be switched on and off as required and are thermostatically controlled (dial is under the flap at the top).

More detailed installations are on the pin-board at the cottage.

The panel heaters and towel rails are not connected to this system. They are operated via a coin meter in the garage if you should need them.

HEATING (additional)

Wenlock Stove
This is a multi-fuel stove that can be found behind the electric fire in the lounge. It burns house coal, which can be purchased in bags from the garden centre in Culgaith or from garages in Penrith. It is very efficient and once lit will stay so all night and day if desired. This additional heating is primarily for those staying in the early or late season or at Christmas/New Year when it can get very cold outside, so please use this additional facility. However if it is used please take great care when emptying the ashes that are generated, there is an ash can in the garage for this purpose.

PLACES TO VISIT

As we stated earlier, the location of the cottage could not be better. The village is a friendly one and the surrounding area has a great deal to offer. There are many pubs in the locality where good food can be found, but here are just a few to start you off:

The Black Swan - Culgaith
The Shepherds - Langwathby
The Hardwick Inn - Penruddock
The Shepherds Inn - Melmerby
The Royal Oak - Appleby

Outings from Elm Tree Cottage couldn't be more varied. The Lake District is right on the doorstep and after just a short journey north lays the city of Carlisle. A little further on you will find the famous blacksmiths anvil at Gretna Green. From there it is over the border into Scotland's Southern Uplands of Dumfries and Galloway, the land of Robert Burns, and views across the Solway Firth. Just to the east of Carlisle you will find the roman remains of Hadrians Wall, which marks the northern edge of the Roman occupation of Britain.

A short journey to the south east, from Culgaith, takes you to Kirkby Stephen and into the Yorkshire Dales. For a real treat you can take a picturesque ride on the Settle - Carlisle railway, which passes through Culgaith, and you can catch the train at Appleby which is only 5 miles form Culgaith.

Even more variety can be found if you journey a little way down the M6 form Penrith to Lancaster, Morecambe Bay and even Blackpool is not far.

So much to see and do and not enough time in one visit, so COME AGAIN we'll be glad to see you.

A well behaved dog would also be a welcomed guest at our holiday cottage
