If you seek a warm welcome, informal hospitality and wonderful food, you need look no further for your home from home. Craigard House Hotel is an imposing Victorian Italianate mansion overlooking Campbeltown Loch. Its elevated, South-facing location offers stunning views of sunrise, sunset and the busy sea loch. It is ideally situated in a quiet cul de sac, yet close to the harbour and town centre.
Campbeltown is located in the unspoilt Kintyre Peninsula. With quiet roads and empty beaches, this area offers something for everyone - from walking to windsurfing; birdwatching to Whisky; championship golf to surfing; and, above all, a chance to unwind while absorbing the superb scenic views of heather hills and rolling Atlantic breakers, with a backdrop of seven islands.
Accommodation Each of the twelve rooms is named after islands or villages or hills in the local area. All are comfortable and well-decorated, with fully tiled bathrooms including bath and shower. Most rooms have sea views. There are four double bedded rooms; one single bedded room; five family rooms with double bed and single bed; one family room with double bed and two single beds; and the huge Master Bedroom with its super king size four poster bed and magnificent bow window overlooking the sea. Its namesake is Bheinn Ghuilean - the local high point.
![]() Each room has its own unique character, but also provides for your comfort with: Huge fluffy bath towels; Neutrogena Soap and Toiletries; Hairdryer; Iron and ironing board; Comprehensive Welcome Tray including biscuits and a variety of Tea, Coffee & Hot Chocolate making facilities; Colour TV with Sky channels; DVD; Radio Alarm Clock; Free WiFi All room rates are per room per night and include accommodation, tax and full Scottish Breakfast. Also available are a selection of fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurt and preserves, along with locally smoked Haddock or Kippers, and Vegetarian or Continental options.
As well as wonderful sea views, the Lochside Restaurant offers a superb selection of locally landed shellfish and seafood; locally farmed meat and produce; and cheese, Whisky and Beer from local producers. Chef Joanne Baird and her team will tempt you again and again with lovingly crafted menus. The extensive accompanying wine list and Whisky and spirit selection will satisfy the inner man (or woman!) Hotel Facilities Craigard House, built in 1882, by Architect Henry Clifford, is protected with a 'B' listing by Historic Scotland. Of particular interest is the fine hallway and carved mahogany staircase, overlooked by a magnificent painted window showing a personification of Autumn - a young girl surrounded by wild flowers, ripe fruits, and holding a sheaf of wheat. All the main rooms have intricately corniced ceilings. The Lochside Restaurant is very unusual in that respect, illustrating swallows flying through swags of foliage. The house has an interesting history, being built originally for a local Whisky Distiller and then becoming the local Maternity Nursing Home from 1942 until 1973 - with most of the local inhabitants within that age group having been born here. Transformed into a bijou hotel in 1997, the house remains a local landmark. The comfortable Craigard Lounge and Bar exudes the country house ambience. Soft, comfy chairs, lots of books and magazines, some toys & games, and a choice of music or wide-screen TV. Enjoy an aperitif or after dinner drink here, or just spend a peaceful hour - taking in the view of the busy Campbeltown Loch. The extensive gardens and South-facing view may tempt you to spend some time on the patio. Or, if you are a sea-farer, there are three yacht moorings adjacent to the hotel. We can make any local travel or booking arrangements for you - for example: transport to and from the airport or harbour to the hotel or appointments; golf tee times; or Springbank Distillery visits. If you need to keep up with your business, we have free WiFi as well as a dedicated PC and printer/fax/scanner for guest use. What to see and do in Kintyre and mid-Argyll For the golfer, the Championship Machrihanish Golf Course is a dream come true. A classic links course; redesigned by Young Tom Morris; in the top 100 of World Courses; that is not busy; has local caddies available; arguably the best first hole in the world; and superb views of the Atlantic coast. Even better, residents of this hotel benefit year round from 10% discount on Green Fees. Just to the North on the same coast of Kintyre, a slice of history is in the making: Machrihanish Dunes GC - the first new links course to be created on the West coast of Scotland in over 100 years. The course is being formed on a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest and is due to open for play in May 2009. To the South next to the Mull of Kintyre is Dunaverty, yet another links course with stunning views over the island of Sanda and to the Irish Coast. Undiscovered and therefore great value for money, this course will give an excellent challenge. Other Golf courses on Kintyre are Carradale and Tarbert, not forgetting the adjacent Island of Gigha, which also boasts a nine hole course. Nearby islands Islay and Arran offer a further nine or more courses from which to choose. For the active among you, there are plenty of leisure pursuits to keep you amused. The local Aqualibrium is a new library, gym and 25m swimming pool complex. Or try surfing the Atlantic rollers from Machrihanish or Westport Beaches. On the hill opposite, Bheinn Ghuilean, there are various mountain biking routes to suit all levels of skill. The Kintyre Way offers walkers a route from the Northernmost point of Kintyre at Tarbert, to the tip at Southend, with various branches in between. At one point it is possible to see the islands on either side of the peninsular. A walk to the Mull of Kintyre lighthouse is a must, as is the causeway walk to Davaar Island at low tide. In May, there is the Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon and 10K run. For the music lover, there is the Mull of Kintyre Music Festival in August, and at many other times of the year you can be treated to concerts from the champion Campbeltown Pipe Bands and Brass Band. Springbank Distillery offers regular trips and tastings - with the distinctive briny character of the local whisky confirming Campbeltown as one of the major Whisky regions of Scotland. In Campbeltown, the Heritage Centre and 'Wee Picture House' Art Deco Cinema, offer a look back in time. Photo opportunities abound on the pier and the busy Harbour. The Owl Centre is a must for both young and old, and the shops offer a varied selection of local goods and produce. There is much to occupy you in Kintyre and we look forward to welcoming you.
