History
Clarence House Guesthouse was bought and founded by the late Mr Thomas Slevin in 1962 and is now 43 years in business. The house itself is 106 years old as it was built in 1899. It is an old Victorian town house, which was a private home, owned by the late Mr Hazlet, until it was taken over and converted into a guesthouse and run by Mrs Eleanor Slevin until she retired in 2002. It was originally the only guesthouse or bed & breakfast in the city, then in the late 60`s early 70`s Mr & Mrs Thomas Slevin established Ardowen Hotel, just two minutes away from the guesthouse. After six years, however, it was the last hotel in the city to be bombed as part of the troubles. Following this, we returned to Clarence House and have been here ever since. We are well known throughout the city and further a field. |
| The hotel and guesthouse were frequented by numerous business people and several film crews such as RTWE, BBC, ITV and the same people continue to visit today. We are also visited by many television celebrities, theatre companies, comedians and musicians, largely due to our close proximity to the BBC, University of Ulster (Magee College). Travellers from all over the world have stayed at Clarence House and helped build up the reputation and wide client base throughout the years. Since February 2002, and the retirement of Mrs. Eleanor Slevin, the guesthouse has been awarded three stars by the NJTB and also the AA Hotel Service. |
