YORK TOURIST INFORMATION

CHELMSFORD PLACE makes an ideal base from which to explore York's city streets, which are packed with places of interest.

Best known of all is the world famous Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps, and one of the finest in Europe.

But there's so much more as well, including the city walls, first built in the fourteenth century, and many museums, including the Jorvik Viking Centre - where you can find out how life was lived in York in the year 948 - as well as the Castle and Yorkshire Museum.

There's plenty to interest the whole family at the National Railway Museum, which was recently expanded and is the largest railway museum in the world.

There are also a host of guided walks to show the visitor the hidden corner of the city, including its famous `snickleways` and many different ghost walks are available.

Open top double decker buses run regular tours of the city, as do the cruise ships along the river, so it's easy to see all the sites whether or not you arrive by car.

York boasts a large number of attractions for a city it's size, meaning there's always something entertaining to do. There are three cinemas within easy reach - including a 12-screen multiplex - two atmospheric theatres, a host of restaurants serving a huge variety of international cuisine.

A pleasant way of getting to the city centre from Chelmsford Place is to take the riverside walk along the Ouse, which can be joined just 400 metres across the road from the guest house.

Just a short walk from Chelmsford Place are the championship-standard Fulford golf course, with the York University and designer outlet centre just a few minutes drive away and York race course, one of the leading tracks in the country and sometimes known as the 'Ascot of the North'.

Beyond York itself, thereare a host of attractive towns and houses worthy of a visit. Especially well-known is the magnificent Castle Howard, where Brideshead Revisited was filmed. Two National Parks are alsonear at hand with the North York Moors Railway (famous for 'Heartbeat') running original old steam trains operating a regular passenger/dining service from Pickering to Whitby via Goathland, with the other National Park being the Yorkshire Dales about one hours drive away.

There's so much to see and do in York and the surrounding area, you'll be spoilt for choice.

"We're looking forward to seeing you soon!"
