Situated in the historic market town of Tavistock, gateway to Dartmoor ... The Bedford and Tavistock are both steeped in history. The hotel was built in 1820 in castellated style on the site of a Benedictine Abbey. The 15th Century gateway and ancient stone porch from the Abbey still remain and are incorporated into the structure. It was a private dwelling for the Dukes of Bedford for 100 years. Relax and enjoy the combination of comfort and style, delicious food, fine wines, warm hospitality and impeccable service, which go to make The Bedford a unique haven for our guests. |
Accommodation![]() Each of the bedrooms has a unique charm and character of its own, with tasteful furnishings, all that is necessary to provide the comfort our guests deserve. There are 30 rooms, all en-suite and each with colour TV, direct dial telephone, clock radio, trouser press, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities. The Hotel is also pleased to offer cots, baby listening and baby sitting by prior arrangement. |

According to legend, Bowerman the Hunter angered the witches of Dartmoor by driving his pack through one of their secret coverns. They were so outraged that, in their fury, they turned him and his hounds (the boulders surrounding the rock) into stone.
