Battlesteads is the greenest hotel in Northumberland and the only one with a carbon-neutral heating system.
Converted from an 18th century farmstead, Battlesteads retains a real Northumbrian country atmosphere with beamed ceilings and fascinating historic prints lining the walls. The bar features five cask-ales including Durham Magus, Wylam Gold Tankard and both Black Sheep Bitter and Nel's Best. The wine list runs to over 25 excellent varieties, all of which have eco credentials such as Fairtrade, organic and bio-dynamic wines.
Since it was taken over by Richard and Dee Slade in 2005, Battlesteads has rapidly gained an enviable reputation for fine food in north Tynedale. Two acre gardens and two polytunnels provide fresh veg, salads and herbs for the restaurant and all the ingredients for the exquisite menu are sourced from within 25 miles of the hotel. The style is primarily modern British but with a smattering of international choices for those with a more cosmopolitan palate. Vegetarian choices are always available.
Meals, snacks and sandwiches are available throughout the day, with both a set menu and 'Chalk Board' specials, which change weekly. Those with a sweet tooth should check out the mouth-watering home-made desserts.
Locally reared beef, lamb and pork are available at the popular Sunday lunch carvery, and all at set prices.
Lunches are served from 12.00 noon to 3.00pm
Dinner is served from 6.30pm, last orders 9.30pm
The 17 bedrooms are all en-suite with TV and DVD, ironing board and hairdryer. Four ground floor rooms have facilities for disabled people and are within easy, level access of the bar, restaurant and parking.
