The Battlesteads has undergone a major refurbishment over the last 12 months, completely transforming the interior into a stylish country Inn with a new 80-seat restaurant. The restoration is complete with a light and airy conservatory leading to a secret walled beer garden.
Converted from an 18th century farmstead, Battlesteads retains a real Northumbrian country atmosphere with beamed ceilings and fascinating historic prints lining the walls. The bar features 4 cask-ales including Durham Magus, Wylam Gold Tankard and both Black Sheep Ale and Black Sheep Special. The wine list runs to over 20 excellent varieties.
Since re-opening Battlesteads has rapidly gained an enviable reputation for fine food in north Tynedale; chefs source the best of local ingredients to ensure freshness and flavour, including seasonal game and Cheviot reared lamb as well as prime Northumbrian beef. Fish and seafood come from North Shields Fish Quay. Look out for dishes including oak smoked duck, chicken and salmon (as well as breakfast kippers!) from the local Bywell Smokery. Vegetarian choices are always available. The style is primarily modern British but with a smattering of international choices for those with a more cosmopolitan palate.
Meals, snacks and sandwiches are available throughout the day, with both a set menu and 'Chalk Board' specials, which change weekly, those with a sweet tooth should check out the mouthwatering home-made desserts.
