Location and History

Sedbergh is an historic market town, with cobbled yards and unique atmosphere. It is ideally situated to enjoy both the Lake District National park and Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The Dales Way walk from Ilkley to Bowness goes through Sedbergh, as does the Cumbrian Cycleway, a 250 mile circular route which passes though and can be joined at Sedbergh.

Approximately 5 miles east of Sedbergh is Cautley Spout, a plunging cascade which falls 200m down Cautley Crag to the River Rawthey.

The Quaker movement has always been strong in the area of Dentdale and Sedbergh. George Fox, founder in 1652 of the Society of Friends, frequently preached here. Fox's Pulpit is a rock on Fir Bank Fell which can be seen from Ash Hining Farm. Brigflatts is the oldest Friends Meeting House in England, dated 1675.

Nowadays Sedbergh is probably best known for its boys' boarding school. It was founded in 1525. Since 1881 the school has organised its annual Wilson Run over a tough cross-country course.
