
The English town of Hertford is located within the area that is known as Hertfordshire. The town is located within the district of East Hampshire. During 2006 the district of East Hampshire was ranked as one of the top ten places for people to live within the United Kingdom and the televisions channel 4 conducted this survey.
The district became a civil parish during 2001. The town of Hertford has a population of about twenty eight thousand. The name Hertford dates back to the Anglo Saxon times and the name means a ford that is frequented by stags or harts.
The town of Hertford is located at the point where four rivers meet and these rivers are known as Mimram, Beane, Rib and also the Lea. The rivers flow southwards towards the Thames.
The town centre of Hertford still follows the layout that dates back to the medieval times and there are many timber-framed building along this route. There are a lot of the timber-framed buildings located on the street that is known as St Andrews Street.
The employment within the town is focused around the County hall, which is home to the county council of Hertfordshire. Other important employers within the town include the district council of East Hertfordshire and also McMullen's Brewery. There are a lot of residents that live within the town but commute to the city of London for work. The town of Hertford has suffered slightly for not having a modern shopping mall however it does have most of the main supermarkets.
