The Scottish town of Girvan is situated in the county of South Ayrshire within the area of Carrick. Girvan is also a Scottish burgh. The town of Girvan has a population of about eight thousand. Girvan was originally developed as a fishing port however nowadays it is also a very popular seaside resort that has beautiful cliffs and beaches. The town of Girvan is twenty miles south of Ayr and about thirty miles north of Stranraer. The town is one of the main ferry ports that operate between Northern Ireland and Scotland.
There is a regular boat that sails from the harbour in Girvan to the island Ailsa Craig. The island of Ailsa Craig is located on the Firth of Clyde. During the summer months it is possible to sail around the island on the popular paddle steamer called the Waverley. The town of Girvan has a strong railway network, as it is located on the main southwestern line from Glasgow.
The town of Girvan has its own secondary school called Girvan Academy. There is a lot of local groups in the town that include the volunteer group known as Girvan Oasis. It is a youth group for children aged between thirteen and eighteen years of age. The group operates within the local community centre and is held on a Thursday night. The Girvan Oasis group do a wide range of things including themed nights, games, puzzle nights and they also go on a range of trips throughout the year.
