Cleethorpes is a town that defies comfortable historical convention, in that there is a great deal of conflicting evidence concerning the genuine date of foundation of the town. Recent archaeological excavations have unearthed relics and artefacts that would indicate that the town was founded somewhere around the Iron Age. Other academics have strongly contested the accuracy of such findings, and they argue that whilst yes, there maybe some indications that the town may have been founded at that time, the town as we now know was not created until the 9th century.

It may not look like much, but first impressions can be deceiving and Waltham Windmill is a landmark which has a great deal of historical significance attached to it, given the remarkably strong impact it had upon the community. The mill that still stands even to this day was actually the third mill to be created with the predecessors both being blown down due to inferior construction.

However, we should be thankful that Waltham Windmill is still with us to this day, as in an ironic twist of fate, its sturdy construction almost caused it to be torn down! During the Second World War the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) engaged in an intense bombing campaign in a bid to disrupt the British war effort, and by extension, hopefully wear them down in the long run. British High Command became concerned that the Waltham Windmill was serving as a convenient landmark for German Bombers in order to help them more easily co-ordinate their attacks and so there were plans to tear the building down.
