Clacton on Sea is the largest town in Essex, England. The town, a popular seaside resort, has, in recent years, become a retirement hotspot. The Clacton on Sea railway station runs through the town and is an hour and a half into London. The town was founded in 1871, and built up as a seaside resort with its main access by sea. The Clacton Pier was once an area where ships would dock; today the pier offers many forms of entertainment. In the 1930s, Billy Butlin came into the town and bought up a bunch of land. He created a second holiday camp built around a lake and included: an amusement park, miniature railway, tennis courts, lawns, roller-skate rink, and indoor and outdoor pools. Each night you could enjoy a show or some sort of entertainment. Unfortunately, due to cheaper package holidays and the changes in what visitors were looking for, the camp was sold and has been recently torn down and rebuilt as housing. That hasn't deterred people from coming to Clacton on vacations or to visit this once booming resort town.
Clacton offers a variety of activities which include; parks, a golf course, arcades, pleasure pier, and its own small airfield. You will also find crowded beaches in the summer time, full of tourists and vacationers. Each summer, there are a number of annual entertainment programs. First comes the Clacton carnival, held the second Saturday of August and running through the week. The carnival usually has a theme for the week, and is full of activities and ends with the crowning of a queen. The second big event is the Clacton Air Show, taking place in August on Thursday and Friday. The air show displays both historic and modern aircraft. There is plenty of shopping and theatres along the way if you would rather partake in that. All in all, Clacton is still a nice town by the water to go, relax, and enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze.
