In 1581 the town of Chipping Norton was the home of the poet Elizabeth Jane Weston and she was born in the town however soon afterwards she moved to Prague to be with her mother and stepfather. Her stepfather was known as Edward Kelly and he was an alchemist in the court of Emperor Rudolf the second.
In 1616 the infamous local highwayman James Hind was born in the town. In 1652 he was executed for the crime, high treason.
