The town is located at the point where the estuary forms a bed of reeds and some marsh ground and these are important areas for migratory birds. There is a vast number of festivals and events which are held in or around the town of Budleigh Salterton and these include the gala week, music and drama festival, literary festival, budstock, sundown and operatic musical to name a few things. The gala week within the town is a serried of fundraising events and they are usually held during the last week of May. The music and drama festival is an inaugural festival, which usually takes place in August. The festival took place for the first time in 2005 but it is now a very popular event.
