
Barnstaple, Devon is a main town in the district known as the oldest borough in England. It was located at low crossing points of the River Taw. Barnstaple gained its importance and after the Saxon era became the major regional centre in Devon. Barnstaple is located on the banks of River Taw, which made it a principal port, a major market town, and one of the oldest centers in North Devon. Barnstaple is an ancient borough and honorable town from the time of Edward III, used as a naval interface in his reign.
Barnstaple is famous for its varied markets such as the cattle market on Fridays, produce markets every Tuesday and Friday in the Guildhall and crafts market on other weekdays. A developing shopping mart area includes the Green Lanes; most of the chain stores represent there. Barnstaple has of variety of fast food restaurants and other low-key eatables. You could also try the cafe by church walk. Barnstaple has a choice of good restaurants from English to Chinese; some new themed restaurants and bars are also a great attraction in Barnstaple.
Barnstaple also has a beautiful Leisure Centre, including a large swimming pool. Over the ancient old bridge, there is a new ten-pin bowling but if you fancy a more active activity try go-karting at a venue on the town Industrial Estate.
Traffic used to be a problem in the summer as roads to the 3 beaches at Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton; were often clogged up with tourist traffic, however, with the opening of a new beautiful Barnstaple bridge, it has taken the road rush away from the main town centre and the traffic problem has considerably reduced.
