
Ashbourne is an English market town that is located within the Derbyshire Dales. The town has a population of about seven thousand. The town is considered by many to be the gateway to Dovedale.
There is a very popular walking and cycling trail within the town and this trail is known as the Tissington Trail. The path starts at Mapleton Lane, which is located on the northern outskirts of the town. The trail follows the route that the former Buxton to Ashbourne railway.
The trail runs from what was once the railway station for Ashbourne and then the route travels through Tissington. From the village of Tissington the trail joins that of the High Peak.
The Ashbourne railway line was built during 1894 and then it was closed to passengers in 1954. All of the railway services on the Ashbourne to Parsley Hay section of the track were discontinued in 1964.
The Ashbourne railway line used to run all the way down to Rocester which is near Uttoxeter and it joined the main railway north Staffordshire. The southern link opened in 1899 but it closed to passengers in 1954 and the railway line became completely unused in the early part of the 1960's.
A section of the Limestone Way also begins in the town of Ashbourne.
Ashbourne is a fairtrade town and it became a fairtrade town in March 2005. There is a vast array of cafes, shops and a range of other businesses and organisations that support the fairtrade name.
