
Alton is a small English market town found in the county of Hampshire. The town of Alton has a population of about sixteen thousand five hundred and eighty four and is located southwest of Farnham.
Alton is home to Treloar College, the national specialist college for young people with disabilities. Alton is twinned with the area of Pertuis in France and also the area of Montecchio Maggiore in Italy. The nearby village of Chawton is where Jane Austen once lived.
The town was once popular for the industry of brewing and the surrounding area was used for growing hops and barley. The barley was also malted in Alton area. The malting is still located on street known as Lower Turk although it is now not used for that purpose. The maltings belonged to the brewery since 1841. The malting was actually still producing malt up until 1949.
The Pearce family once owned the timber mill in Alton. The Pearce family owned it between the 1890's and 1939. The mills once employed over one hundred people and the mill also produced wooden tools that were used by the brewing industry in the town.
Since 1763 there has been a vast number of breweries in Alton. Nowadays the Coors brewing company has a brewery in Alton, which is producing Grolsch, Worthingtons and Carling. The company known as Coors Brewing is amongst the top ten brewing companies in the world today.
